Coronavirus victim's son: Care home residents 'sitting ducks’ for disease

A man whose father died in a care home from coronavirus says care home residents are "sitting ducks" for the disease.

Labour councillor Chris Kirk, whose father Jacques died, accused the government of being slow to act, saying care homes should have been put into lockdown earlier.

Mr Kirk told 5 Live's Stephen Nolan: “I just can’t believe that the government has allowed the situation to develop as it has where people in care homes are essentially sitting ducks for this terrible disease”.

Speaking previously to 91ȱ News, the Department for Health and Social Care said it had announced £2.9bn to help local authorities respond to pressures in key services, such as adult social care.

A spokesperson said it had published guidance for care homes and councils on how best to prioritise the workforce and added it was reinstating "the professional registration of 8,000 former social workers to fill vital roles in the community".
