In typical Rossini fashion, The Italian Girl in Algiers overture was written in less than a month. It is something of a tribute to Haydn鈥檚 Surprise Symphony, with light pizzicato passages interrupted by huge orchestral hits. It, and the opera it is taken from, is still frequently performed by orchestras and bands around the world.
