The footballer and doctor who have overcome cancer
A hospital consultant who first treated former England footballer Geoff Thomas when he was diagnosed with leukaemia is now fighting blood cancer himself.
Dr Salim Shafeek, Clinical Director of Haematology and Oncology at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, was diagnosed with myeloma at the start of the year.
He has undergone a stem cell transplant at the centre for clinical haematology at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
That centre is supported by Birmingham-based charity Cure Leukaemia, whose patron is the former Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder.
Thomas has become well-known as a cycling fundraiser, and will be leading a Cure Leukaemia team from London to Paris next month during Blood Cancer Awareness Month.
The team will include Dr Shafeek's 24-year-old son Faheez.
