What's the best way to stop prisoners committing more crimes once released?
The part-privatised system for monitoring and rehabilitating offenders in England and Wales is being scrapped. All former prisoners on licence and those serving community orders would in future be supervised by the public sector. But could the new arrangements make things worse? Our home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw reports.
The Ministry of Justice told Today that its "reforms will harness the innovation of private and voluntary providers while drawing on the expertise of the National Probation Service to boost rehabilitation and protect the public. We are already moving forward at pace to ensure a smooth transition to the new model and have recruited over 600 new probation staff to improve standards and ultimately increase public safety.鈥
