The graffiti artist honouring Sudan's protest victims

For months, protesters have filled the streets of Sudan's cities, demanding power be handed over to a civilian government. More than 120 people were killed as the peaceful protests were met with violence from the security forces.

Assil Diab returned to Sudan at the height of the protests and undertook a project to honour those killed. The graffiti artist created large murals of the victims on the walls of their family homes.

Despite being chased and arrested by the security forces, Assil created thirty portraits, including the one of Ahmed Kheir pictured here. She spoke to Newsday about Ahmed and why she took such risks to memorialise him.
