Reversing hand & arm paralysis
Nerves have been "rewired" to return movement to paralyzed hands and arms
Surgeons in Melbourne have helped restore movement in the hands and arms of 13 people using innovative surgery to rewire their nerves. Functioning nerves from elsewhere in the arm can be reprogrammed to give movement to paralyzed areas.
Patients can now feed themselves, put on make-up, turn a key, handle money and type at a computer. Project Leader Dr Natasha van Zyl spoke to Today.
