Asante and Zakiyah - Different Shades
Asante and Zakiyah’s parents separated when they were young children and are now part of a large blended family of mixed heritage. Asante was prompted to take part in the Project by her dissertation supervisor, to talk about her dissertation which was focused on experiences of the ‘black sisterhood’. During their longer conversation they discuss being black women, being of mixed heritage and how society views them – and in this extract, the different experience they have to their sister Denim who has darker skin than them.
