Salvage vessel crew remembers 'dreadful' D-Day #DDay75

Peter Oliver - grew up in Southampton. He was 16 in 1944 and had witnessed, first-hand, the damage from the aerial bombardment of the city.

On D-Day - he was serving in the merchant navy, working on a salvage vessel.

It recovered ships that had sunk off Omaha beach.

In recent years he's one of the many who have been awarded France's highest military award - the L茅gion d'Honneur.

Now living in Bournemouth - he's been talking of his experiences following D-Day - the first time he's really spoken about the details of the time.

Prior to this recording Peter hadn't even talked about the events of D-Day with his family.

Having lost his sight 4 years ago - he's now become an ambassador for the charity Blind Veterans UK. He has thanked his wife Eva, who is now his carer, and the charity for their support.
