‘Gentleman’ Johnny Whiteley
On this week’s podcast Dave Woods chats with rugby league royalty.
‘Gentleman’ Johnny Whiteley MBE is one of the games’ greatest ever players. An absolute legendary figure for Hull FC for whom he played for 15 years, captaining his hometown club to league championships and also in two Challenge Cup Finals. But its perhaps his exploits on the international stage that stand out.
A star of the last Great Britain to win a series against Australia on home soil in 1959 – some 60 years ago, he also coached the last team to win a series down under back in 1970.
With the return of Great Britain to the rugby league calendar this autumn, 88 year old Whiteley takes us down memory lane with tales of great games, great players and his undying love of rugby league.
