The Long Tower
There's a ruin in the grounds of Lumen Christi College in Derry that is said to be a 17th century windmill. Is it in fact the original Long Tower from the 12th century monastery?
In the grounds of Derry's Lumen Christi College there are the remains of a round tower. For many years it has been thought to be the ruins of a 17th century windmill from the time of the Siege Of Derry. New carbon dating suggests that it is, in fact, five hundred years older. Is it the original Long Tower from the medieval monastery in the city? Historian Ken McCormack and Lumen Christi teacher Stephen Doherty tell Deirdre Donnelly about the new evidence, the Columban connection with the site and Derry's role in the conflict between Celtic Christianity and Roman Christianity.
