Strange Letters: Episode 1 - ' I simply cannot believe Benjy is missing'
One hundred years ago today a pilot from Dorset set off on his morning aerial patrol, as part of his war duties.
That morning - like many others over the conflict - he failed to return.
His name was Ben Strange.
He and his brother Louis, from Tarrant Keyneston, were somewhat pioneers of aerial warfare.
Their sister, Ruth, served as a nurse during the war. And frequently wrote home to her parents on the family farm in North Dorset.
Those letters were recently discovered by the family, and this week we're re-living the events of Ben's disappearance through Ruth's eyes.
Ruth's words are voiced here by her great-granddaughter, Rachel Wheeler, and introduced by her grandson, Jonathan Wheeler.
This letter was written by Ruth on October 3rd 1918.
