The 'Pastoral' landscape refers not to the leafy hills of Surrey but to the blasted terrain of the fields of France. It is a beautiful elegy to the dead of the First World War.

The trumpet cadenza in the second movement is a reference to Vaughan William's recollection of a military bugler practising.
