GREAT GRIMSBY MP MELANIE ONN CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT ACTION ON 'SLEEP-IN' BACK PAY
Around 拢400M is owed to overnight care workers nationwide
Great Grimsby MP Melanie Onn is urging the Government to take urgent action over millions of pounds worth of back-pay which is owed to what are known as 'sleep-in' shift carers across the UK. Many carers who sleep overnight at the home of the people they care for have not been paid the National Minimum Wage properly over the past few years. It led to one East Yorkshire woman taking her case to an employment tribunal in 2016. Melanie Onn MP tells 91热爆's Political Reporter Sarah Sanderson, in this interview, that she'd like to see the Government be much more pro-active on the issue. Meanwhile, Care England, which represents independent care providers estimates around 拢400M is owed in back-pay to sleep-in shift care workers nationwide. Care England is lobbying Parliament today. It says "A full independent, accurate analysis of the impact of the bill for sleep-in back pay on social care is urgently needed.". Gavin Edwards, from the union Unison which has represented under-paid workers within this sector says "Obviously it is in nobody's interests for care providers to be going bust, that's not something that Unison wants to see and I hope it's something that the Government doesn't want to see as well which is why it is so important that there's urgent action and that additional funding is given. A Government spokesperson said ""The Social Care Compliance Scheme - which allows employers to review their own compliance with national minimum wage law - will help ensure workers are paid what they are owed while maintaining services for people who access social care. And the Government is considering options and engaging with social care providers to minimise any impact on the sector."
