Kamasi Washington: "If we want the world to be a beautiful place it can only happen if we make our own little worlds beautiful"
Saxophonist Kamasi Washington chats to Lauren Laverne and Gilles Peterson about his new album Heaven & Earth.
The album was two years in the making and Kamasi admits that he can toil over songs. When he first went in to record Heaven & Earth, he wasn't sure what it was going to be, but he ended up creating two sets of songs, representing the duality of his view of life.
The album opener, Fists Of Fury (a cover of the theme to his favourite Bruce Lee film) speaks to him about the struggle of life and this is a struggle for the individual to conquer because "no one's going to do it for you."
Kamasi hopes that the album will lead people on a journey to realise that we all have control over our own universe. So it's up to us to make the world a beautiful place.
