Centenary Plaques Celebrate Achievements of Five Hull Women
The achievements of five Hull women are remembered as part of International Women's Week
Centenary Plaques were unveiled for five Hull women today to celebrate their achievements. It was part of a series of events in Hull to mark International Women's Week. The new plaques in the city honour Mary Hatfield who was the first Hull City Councillor, Eva Crackles who was a botanist and conservationist, poet and philosopher Elsa Gidlow, designer of printed textiles Pat Albeck and Flo Bilton, women's goalkeeper and founding member of women's FA. Karen Walker, former England women's football captain and striker and Carol Thomas, also a former captain for the England women's team both paid tribute to Flo Bilton describing her as a trailblazer. Karen says "Flo drove many of us everywhere in her car and if she wasn't there for us, there would be players who would never have played for England." Carol adds "If it hadn't have been for Flo I don't think I would have got the caps or the recognition that I received." Councillor Mary Glew who established the centenary plaque scheme during her year as Lord Mayor said "There are a whole host of events taking place in Hull throughout International Women's Week. I am delighted to launch the week with the unveiling of these plaques to five truly inspirational women from our city."
