Yorkshire and Humber MEP remembers those who lost their lives in Hull's Triple Trawler Disaster
Mike Hookem, who lost his brother on the Ross Cleveland, says they'll never be forgotten.
A ceremony will take place in Hull to mark the fiftieth anniversary of one of the bleakest periods in Hull's maritime history. Three fishing trawlers were lost in January and February 1968, with the loss of 58 men. Today a trawler bow anchor will be dedicated in memory of those lost. The Yorkshire and Humber MEP Mike Hookem's brother Keith was one of those who died on board the Ross Cleveland. Mike Hookem has been speaking about Hull's triple trawler disaster to 91热爆 Political Reporter Sarah Sanderson. He says "From then on we would be listening to the radio and reading the papers, waiting for some news that it was a nightmare and that he was coming home. It was like there was a dark cloud over Hessle Road because everyone knew somebody in the fishing industry and the fifty-eight men who were on those trawlers." The three sinking's brought widespread national publicity to the conditions in which fishermen worked. Lillian Bilocca, also known as 'Big Lil', was a fisherman's wife and fisheries worker from Hessle Road in Hull. As a result of the triple trawler disaster, she led a campaign with other fisherman's family members to improve safety on North Sea trawlers. Mike Hookem spoke of Lillian Bilocca and said "She was a big character on Hessle Road, everybody knew her and she championed the call for safety. She had a heart of gold and fought for the fishermen." Tonight a 91热爆 Four television documentary at 21:00 will tell the story of the Hull fishermen who did the most dangerous job in Britain and their wives whose protest ensured such a disaster never happened again. The women's campaign was one of the biggest and most successful civil action campaigns of the 20th century.
