North Lincolnshire Woman leads the way in helping to change UK Surrogacy Law
Surrogacy UK, which Sarah Jones chairs, has helped spark a review into the current law.
A North Lincolnshire woman is helping to lead the way into changing UK surrogacy law, which she describes as outdated and unclear. Sarah Jones is Chair of Surrogacy UK, which recently published a report calling for urgent law reform in order to ensure the welfare and interests of surrogate-born children are of prime concern, remove uncertainty over parenthood and broaden access to surrogacy. Sarah says "The current law doesn't suit how families are created these days. There's an acceptance now of people going through IVF and needing to have their families created in different ways and the current laws don't reflect that surrogacy is a part of that. Surrogacy is on the rise in the UK and now its much more accepted by everybody that surrogacy is a perfectly acceptable pathway to parenthood. We need the laws to reflect that to make it easier for people to undertake it." The Conservative Brigg and Goole MP, Andrew Percy, recently set up an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Surrogacy. He says "We all recognise that this law is out of date. We need to update surrogacy law in this country so that it reflects modern Britain and modern families." The Law Commission will begin a review into UK surrogacy law as part of its 13th Programme of Law Reform. Professor Nick Hopkins, Law Commissioner for property, family and trust law, says "For us to take on work in a particular area, we have to have agreement under the protocol that we have with Government that there's a serious intention to take forward reform. So the fact that we've been asked to look at it shows that the Government recognises this issue is a priority." Professor Nick Hopkins from the Law Commission added that both Sarah Jones, Surrogacy UK and Andrew Percy MP have helped to inform the debate on surrogacy to bring to light the problems with the current law.
