But the man behind the songs, Shane MacGowan has lived a life that has on many occasions taken him to the brink. His intake of drink and drugs - led many to wonder if he'd make it to 30. But, he's defied them all and last night - in front of a sell out crowd at Dublin's National Concert Hall - he celebrated his 60th birthday. David Sillito was there at a party that few would have imagined him ever seeing.
