Child asylum seekers double in Surrey
The number of children in Surrey seeking asylum has more than doubled in five years to 140. They are 16% of all the children in the care of Surrey County Council, in the year to March 2017. In the year to March 2013, there were 60 child asylum seekers in Surrey, 7% of the total in care. Surrey County Council says looking after them costs 拢4.5m but a government grant only covers about 拢3.5m with the rest coming from Surrey's general budget.
