The story behind Britain's first female MP

Academics from the University of Reading have been looking further into the life of Nancy Astor, the Cliveden resident who became Britain's first female MP, as Sarah Walker found out more.

Dr Jaqui Turner, University of Reading:

"A lot of research and writing actually focuses on her personality rather than her politics, and you can't avoid the fact the she really was a rather colourful personality.

"She hadn't been part of the suffrage campaign, so she was a really interesting person to take that first seat.

"She immediately became so different to all the other MPs, not just because she was a woman, but she became an MP for all women... and children if you look at it that way."
