Former England international Martin Keown says Gareth Southgate needs to show "more authority" in order for the national team to succeed at next year's World Cup.

Ex-Arsenal man Keown pinpoints the need for Southgate to identify how to get the best out of players such as Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford quickly.

"He's got the job without having to work that hard for it. He's in a fantastic position but he has to do things with more authority", said the Premier League winner.

"I really respect him and he has the knowledge to do it, but it would be a failure if we didn't get the best from these players鈥�.
