Stalking: Victims not taken seriously enough

Reports from two watchdogs found not enough was being done for victims of stalking

Not enough is being done for victims of stalking and harassment in England and Wales, who are being left vulnerable to increasingly violent behaviour by the authorities. That's according to two watchdogs.

Alexis Bowater, former chief executive of the Network for Surviving Stalking and a former stalking victim tells Today: "In 94% of murders, stalking is a build-up to that event." She says the authorities are not joining up the dots.

Garr Shewan, assistant chief constable of Greater Manchester Police and National Police Chiefs Council lead for stalking and harassment admits there have been failures.

"Every police force in the UK has to recognise and train all front line officers in understanding the risk for victims and currently it isn't happening," he said.
