For decades, diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and the US were virtually non-existent. But in 1972 President Nixon visited China, flanked by senior advisers and a huge American press contingent. It was the first time a US president had visited the country since Communist rule had begun 22 years earlier. The trip culminated in Nixon meeting Chairman Mao. The meeting was of great geopolitical importance – and marked an important moment in the Cold War.
