Should Sikhs be allowed to wear a Kirpan in the workplace?
A British Sikh man, working at a telecom firm in the UK, has been given permission to wear a Kirpan at work. It was reported that it was initially denied but the Sikh council intervened and explained the Kirpan is part of the sikh articles of faith and that he was allowed to carry it.
The telecom firm did respond to its actions saying " We are sensitive to the requirements of different groups, however, this particular case involved the wearing of a ceremonial Kirpan which initially raised health and safety concerns. After consideration, we reached a compromise with the employee concerned and believed the matter was closed."
Parvandeep a baptised Sikh wears the ceremonial dagger and spoke to us about why wearing one comes with responsibility rather than it being seen as a potential weapon.
