Rex and Vera met in 1952 at a 'village hop' in Somerset. Rex was in the RAF and was based near Vera's family home.

A year later they were engaged and Vera moved to Bexhill-on-Sea with Rex, leaving behind a life in the country but never losing her west country accent.
