Elodie's Story, told by Michelle Keegan
This is Elodie's Story, told by Michelle Keegan.
鈥淢y little sister, Ellie, she鈥檚 blind but she can still do lots and lots of stuff鈥.鈥 Finn, Elodie鈥檚 older brother, says.
When Elodie was born her eyes were very small and unfinished. When she was a few months old, one of her retina鈥檚 detached. Not long after, her other retina also detached. Michelle, Elodie鈥檚 mum explains, 鈥渨e were told that there would be a gradual deterioration of her sight and that she would lose all her vision eventually.鈥滶lodie says, 鈥淚 wish I could see like Finn鈥 I could see more amazing things.鈥
Being blind for Elodie is not just about a loss of vision, it鈥檚 about loss of learning opportunities. It鈥檚 for this reason that Michelle is keen to find special ways of helping her daughter achieve independence.
Thanks to In Tune music workshops run by Open Arts NI, Elodie has gained so much confidence. The workshops are all about co-ordination, listening and turn taking which are helping to build Elodie鈥檚 independence. Elodie has since discovered her true passion; music.
Michelle says, 鈥淲hen I see her laughing and enjoying herself. I just think. We can do this.鈥
