Byron鈥檚 story, told by Rachael Latham
This is Byron鈥檚 story, told by Rachael Latham.
鈥淟earning to swim is something every child should do鈥 says Rachael.
Rachael Latham, former Paralympian swimmer, meets five year-old Byron at his 91热爆 Children in Need funded project, SMILE (Swimming, Mates, Independence, Leisure, Enjoy). Byron was born with cerebral palsy. Day to day, Byron has to be strapped into a variety of equipment to help him go about life safely.
However, there is one thing which allows Byron to be completely free鈥wimming. In water Byron doesn鈥檛 need to be confined to any equipment, he muscles are able to relax and he can learn how to co-ordinate his limbs better. Not only is swimming in a special warm pool a joy for Byron but it is for the whole family. In this safe space Byron鈥檚 mum and brothers can all be together and enjoy family time.
Thanks to 91热爆 Children in Need funding, swimming teacher Sally-Ann is able to help Byron learn how to swim. Sally-Ann says, 鈥淣ow he can kick his legs independently 鈥 the next stage for Byron is independent swimming. I do believe he will be able to achieve that.鈥
Byron says, 鈥淚 love swimming, it makes me feel free.鈥
