Crisis in UK prisons: What's being done?

Last week, the prison guard union said that more officers were needed to stop our jails turning into "bloodbaths". Then on Sunday afternoon, specially trained officers had to be brought in to deal with a riot at HMP Bedford after 230 inmates took over two wings. With assaults on prison guards and inmates on the rise, and self-harm and suicide an increasing issue, the government is now promising to increase staff numbers - but it's going to cost 拢100 million to do it. So why are our prisons in crisis - and will these new measures be enough?
