John Humphrys: Aberfan was ‘a scene from hell’
John Humphrys, the first reporter on the scene of the Aberfan disaster in 1966, told 5 live that what he saw was “a scene from hell’.
Today marks 50 years since the tragedy in which a colliery spoil tip collapsed onto the Pantglas Junior School and neighbouring houses.
116 children and 28 adults were killed in the tragedy.
Humphrys, who has lived in Aberfan previously, said that “what I saw, I could not recognise as being the village I knew”.
“Many miners were digging for their own children,” he told us, “their faces were black with the coal dust and there were streaks of white because of their sweat and tears.”
