Martin Lewis: Parents shouldn鈥檛 pay children鈥檚 uni tuition fees
Money expert Martin Lewis has advised parents of students starting university this autumn not to pay the tuition fees upfront, because when they have a job, he says they may not earn over the threshold in order to pay it back.
Martin, talking to Adrian Chiles on 91热爆 Radio 5 live, said that 鈥渦nless they鈥檙e really high earners, then you鈥檙e getting close to not paying (it) back鈥. His advice is that it is better for parents with any disposable income to spend the money helping them pay food and accommodation bills during university, and in saving for a deposit on a house.
He was talking as hundreds of thousands of students start their university careers. Many face tuition bills of over 拢9,000 a year, but student loans are available to help pay those costs, and they are only repayable when graduates earn over a certain threshold.
