Russia came into this competition as searing-hot favourites. Winners of all rhythmic gymnastic gold medals at the Olympic Games since Sydney 2000, they have been the dominant force in this discipline and looked set to defend their title comfortably.
However, with the Spanish gymnasts surprisingly finishing ahead of them in qualifying and challenges from Belarus and Italy looming large, they will have to be on top of their game if they are to reclaim the gold.
