Southgate makes Open cut 12 months after beating cancer

Golfer Matthew Southgate has made the cut at The Open, 12 months after beating testicular cancer.

The 27-year-old was diagnosed 18 months ago and had surgery last July.

Southgate said: "I am actually a bit choked up to be able to stand here and say I will be playing the weekend. I do not care what I score now, it is a massive achievement for me and a massive step forward in my career. I cannot really put it into words without crying."

Southgate posted two rounds of 71 to ensure he will play at Royal Troon this weekend.
