The tragic mistake that cost the NHS 拢11m

The NHS paid 拢26.1bn last year to cover the costs of compensation for medical negligence.

The NHS set aside 拢26.1bn last year - a quarter of it's annual budget - to cover the costs of compensation for medical negligence.

A High Court judge yesterday approved a settlement payment of 拢11m from Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust, to a mother whose child was born with severe cerebral palsy after medical staff at the King George Hospital maternity unit in Essex failed to notice his slowing heartbeat during his mother's labour in 2007.

We spoke to the child鈥檚 mother, who will remain anonymous, and Edwina Rawson, solicitor at law firm Fieldfisher, about these failures and their cost to the NHS.
