Euros Specials: Mark Hughes
In the latest of our special interviews, Mark Hughes looks back at his international career, as a player and as a manager.
As a former Wales player and manager, Mark Hughes was used to near misses when it came to qualifying for international tournaments. The Stoke City boss came within one game of reaching the 1986 and 1994 World Cups as a player, while as manager, almost took Wales to Euro 2004. Here, ‘Sparky’ discusses his memories of his international career, including the moment Scotland manager Jock Stein collapsed and died at Ninian Park during the 1986 World Cup Qualifying decider, a match Hughes scored in. Hear how he reacted to the moment Wales qualified for their first major tournament since 1958 under Chris Coleman, whether he would do anything different if he was given the chance to manage Wales again, and how much did John Toshack’s famous criticism affect him?
