Why are dog microchips necessary?

Every dog owner in England will have to microchip their animal from 2016 under plans intended to cut a rise in strays.
Rehoming centre manager at the Dogs Trust, Maria Wickes, brought her dog Georgie, who was likely abandoned by a puppy farmer.
Ms Wickes explained that if dogs like Georgie were chipped, "irresponsible" breeders could be held to account.
