Why are dog microchips necessary?

Rehoming centre manager at the Dogs Trust, Maria Wickes, says that if dogs such as hers are chipped, "irresponsible" breeders could be held to account.

Every dog owner in England will have to microchip their animal from 2016 under plans intended to cut a rise in strays.

Rehoming centre manager at the Dogs Trust, Maria Wickes, brought her dog Georgie, who was likely abandoned by a puppy farmer.

Ms Wickes explained that if dogs like Georgie were chipped, "irresponsible" breeders could be held to account.
