New Barbies 'an enormous step forward for feminism'
Barbie, the iconic plastic toy doll model, is getting three new body types this year. The US company behind the famous toy, Mattel, is adding "tall, curvy and petite" body shapes to its line-up of the fashion dolls.
Dr Agnes Nairn, author of Consumer Kids: How Big Business is Grooming our Kids for Profit, and Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett, co-founder of feminist blog the Vagenda, spoke to the Today programme about the significance of the new designs.
"This is an enormous step forward. Feminists have been campaigning for this for years," Ms Lucy Cosslett told presenter Sarah Montague.
"Research that we did with children found they used to torture their Barbies," Dr Agnes Nairn said, "possibly because she was something that was unattainable."
