Former soldier: The QE hospital gave me my life back
Private Karl Hinett was 19 when he almost died during an operation in Iraq in 2005.
He was inside a Warrior tank when he was "caught up in a petrol bomb" after rioters attacked during a raid on a jail in Basra.
He underwent five years of skin grafts and operations at Selly Oak Hospital - now replaced by Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Speaking about the care he received while in hospital he said, "it was their caring nature and their family approach which really helped psychologically in my recovery".
Karl now does lots of charity work and said "the hospital gave me my life back and I intend to use it by helping them however I can".
