The tiny snail that almost stopped the Newbury Bypass

In 1996, with the battle between road-builders and protestors in full swing, it was discovered that the A34 Newbury Bypass would cut through the habitat of the rare Desmoulin's Whorl Snail.

The Highways Agency was forced to move the tiny molluscs to a new area.

Susanne Courtney met Simon Barnett from the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust at the Nature Discovery Centre in Thatcham, and went in search of snails.
