Formerly homeless man appeals for bedding and food this Christmas

Carlos Blanco, a 44-year-old who spent most of the last year sleeping on the street, said people should give homeless people bedding and hot food.

More than two-thirds of homeless people surveyed by homeless charity Crisis admitted they would spend the festive season with neither relatives nor friends.

Carlos Blanco, a 44-year-old who spent most of the last year sleeping on the street, called for people to give homeless people bedding, hot food and clothing:

"I would give them bedding, give them some hot food, a proper homeless person will never turn that away. I'm not saying don't give them money, but I would prefer if people gave them what they needed... to get them through these winter months."

Carlos lost his job in 2011. In December 2014 he ran out of money, had to leave his home, and spent some time sleeping rough. Three weeks ago he got a bedsit through a homeless assistance scheme.

The idea that homeless people 'bring it on themselves' is a "misconception" and in reality "it could happen to anyone", added Carlos, who volunteers for Crisis.

"I've never been on drugs, I've never been dependent on alcohol... I just found myself stuck in the recession and lost my job, got into arrears and got evicted," he said.
