The first interracial kiss on British TV
The British Film Institute has uncovered what is believed to be the earliest known interracial kiss on British TV. You in Your Small Corner was first broadcast live on ITV in June 1962 and has not been seen on TV since.
Heather Stewart, creative director at the BFI, told the Today programme that they came across the film while looking for footage for the BFI LOVE season's Race and Romance on TV event.
“We weren’t sitting around looking for interracial kisses so much as we really wanted to find some great black romance - and the fact is it’s not there," she told presenter Sarah Montague.
Film journalist Simran Hans said that interracial relationships were still rare in Hollywood but that “even more rare is two people of colour in a relationship on screen."
