'If something goes bad you jump into the water'

The explosion on Piper Alpha in the summer of 1988 was the worst accident in the history of offshore oil exploration, in which 167 men died.

As part of his upcoming programme, Oil: A Crude History of Britain, Jim Naughtie spoke to Brian Krause, who worked for firefighter Red Adair, and had never spoke publicly before.

In the event of such an accident there was no escape route on Piper Alpha, Mr Krause told the programme.

"If something bad goes, you jump into the water."

"Nothing was going to be worse than that; nothing ever was," he said.
