Racism in schools towards teachers: What can be done?

Supply teacher Sagheer Afzal, who has been racially abused and Laura Pidcock, education manager at Show Racism the Red Card, discuss.

Supply teacher Sagheer Afzal said he's often been the target of racial abuse. Moreover, he said that senior management in schools have discouraged the reporting of such incidents.

"I was racially abused and punched in the ribs by a student and I was unofficially told by a senior member of staff that it would be better not to report it," Mr Afzal said.

Laura Pidcock is education manager at Show Racism the Red Card she said young people have to be taught to think critically, rather than just told it is wrong:

"We need to look at the drivers behind these racist ideas. In order to shift attitudes, we can't just say 'that's racism'," she said.
