More than 300,000 households in Lancashire are still being advised to boil their water after United Utilities announced that "low" traces of the microbial parasite cryptosporidium at Franklaw water treatment works outside Preston last Thursday.

Complaints have been made regarding communication of the detection to the public.But Gary Dickson, domestic retail director of United Utilities, defended the company's response.

'We did everything practically possible to get the message out through social media and local media as well,' said Dickson.
