In Kilimanjaro, farmers face rampaging elephants at night
The lands surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro are a battleground between farmers and elephants. The elephants are drawn to the crops growing in Kilimanjaro’s rich volcanic soil. They raid the fields at night and once they have learned there is food for the taking, they will keep returning. Richard Leizer is a local Maasai farmer tasked with stopping them – and saving the village’s crops. Facing down elephants in the dead of night is a dangerous job. And there’s a catch: he and the other farmers cannot harm the elephants or they will be sent to prison.
