Gardening tips with Colin Evans

Prepare area's for grass seed sowing which will be carried out in September which is the very best month to sow grass seed which gives plenty of time for the ground to settle and level off before sowing the seed. Once the area is selected then spray the weeds with a Glyphosphate weedkiller and leave it to do its job by killing the weeds right down to the root system. If the weed infestation is heavy then another application will be necessary some three to four weeks later. Once the weeds have died down, rake off the debris and lightly fork over the soil surface and firm. In September water the ground and spread the grass seed which should germinate some three weeks later.聽

Remove poor quality fruit from Apple and Pear trees to ensure the crop stays healthy as fungal diseases like brown rot will quickly destroy a healthy crop. Keep an eye open for Aphid attack which is much in evidence at the moment due to the very hot weather. If spotted, spray with Horticultural Soft Soap or a systemic insecticide.聽

Prepare the ground by single digging ready to plant up with late variety of Potatoes in late August or early September. There are many varieties so just choose any you prefer. 聽If you have a small garden and the space is limited, then Potatoes will grow just as well in containers.聽

Happy Gardening.
