July Fortnight
Now if you're of a certain vintage you may have taken your holidays during the annual July fortnight - at this time each year the factories of Leicester and many across the county would close for two weeks and thousands of people would head to the East coast for their annual holidays. Exactly fifty years ago, the fortnight took place for the first time in July having moved from its traditional place in August. It seems incredible now that manufacturing industry could shut up shop for two whole weeks but it was an important part of the working year. Jo Hayward went to Leicester station - the departure point for many a holiday - to meet up with local historian Cynthia Brown who told her how the tradition began....
