Reynaldo Hahn: Sopra l'acqua indormenzada

From 'Chansons Venezia'. With Ailish Tynan (soprano) and James Baillieu (piano). Live from In Tune. 'Sopra l'acqua indormenzada' means 'On the drowsy waters'. Hahn (1874-1947) explained in a letter to his cousin: 'I've written some Venetian songs... vulgar, sentimental extremely Grand Canal - neither the Venice of the Doges nor that of Byron or Guardi. This is banal, cosmopolitan, pleasure-living Venice, floating on a tide of indolence and facile affairs.' In this song, the poet (Pietro Pagello) takes his young lover out for an evening gondola ride and encourages the moon to feast on her beauty. 'Tears will come to everyone, So for now, laugh and love.'
