Gruesome, hallucinatory, and terribly frank, these postcards of conflict tell the soldier's ghastly tale. Cartoonist Martin Rowson, whose own work is similarly direct and uncompromising, tells Dix's story and ponders why Der Krieg remains such a powerful statement.
