Middlesbrough Town Hall, Albert Road: Heading to the Front in an Ambulance
In 1914, an ambulance manned by the chairman of Middlesbrough Football Club and a former mayor left the town and headed for France. It was paid for by the local authority and seen as the patriotic thing to do.
鈥楳iddlesbrough鈥� was written on the vehicle. The RAC inspected it and they then drove to Folkestone and started the journey to France.
Whilst there; they helped transport wounded soldiers and ended up at the front.
Interestingly the pair had received no medical training.
