Anthea Iveson’s Story
Anthea was 9 on VE Day. She talks about being brought up near the north Norfolk coast.
She recalls going to school on VE Day and being told by her teachers about why it was a significant day. She talks about being allowed to go home early after lunch and in the evening her parents left the lights on in the house for the first time.
Anthea describes her excitement because she could only remember a wartime experience and describes the feeling of freedom and calm. She talks about walking on the local heathland after dark and seeing houses and cars lit up. She describes the feeling of fear during the wartime years because of the threat of a German invasion on the nearby coast.
Anthea says life went on – there was no television so information was limited but she describes how things got better over time.
